Keneilwe Natu presents a powerful outcry against legacies of apartheid in the voice of Nelson Mandela University students. The poem confronts systematic oppression, racism, and denial of dignity while demanding free education as a gateway to liberation. The poem frames students as both victims and warriors for change, blending the haunting past and present resistance.

Keneilwe Natu

We students of Nelson Mandela University.

Recognize injustices of the past

See ghosts of apartheid

wondering between corridors of Embizweni.

Shadows dark, and vast.

We hear the whisper

 Echoing

Lingering dark images

“Slegs Blankes”

White laws - like permanent scars

Mark the stolen land.

We the students of Nelson Mandela,

Recognize that education is the key to success.

The past haunts, but the future- bold?

We chant! We resist!

Where freedom’s voice was silenced

And dreams denied.

“Free education now!”

We the students,

Seeds of hope torn

by systematic spite.

Our voices hoarse from screaming,

That our human bodies too be dignified…

We the students of Nelson Mandela University

Recognize the architects of walls…

of hate, Of pain,

Of arrogance and militancy,

We therefore speak, but not in fear

Ghosts will fade when truth is loud and clear!
