Africanisation-Decolonisation Indaba 2023

We would like to invite you to join us for the upcoming Africanisation-Decolonisation Indaba 2023 as part of the University’s Africanisation-Decolonisation Programme (AfDeP).

30-31 October 2023

09h00- 16h00

Ocean Sciences Campus

The Africanisation-Decolonisation Indaba is an open invitation for us to collectively grapple with the questions: What does (and can) decolonisation look like at Mandela, and what does (and can) it look like through the lens of Mandela, the social figure? The same framing and questions apply to our strategic imperative of Africanisation.

The Indaba will be hosted by the Africanisation-Decolonisation Working Group (ADWG) and the Transdisciplinary Institute for Mandela Studies (TIMS) in collaboration with the University Faculties at Nelson Mandela University.

We hope you will be able to join us for what is envisaged as a rich and dynamic engagement that encourages a variety of modes, including visual and artistic presentations, workshops, panel presentations, etc.

If you are interested in attending or contributing in any format at the event, please fill in this RSVP form by Friday, 29 September 2023

You can also approach Fortunate Jwara at fortunate.jwara@mandela.ac.za and Michaela Penkler at michaela.penkler@mandela.ac.za for any inquiries or further information.

A multiplicity of conceptions on Africanisation and Decolonisation are at play in the higher education sector globally. Without putting any definitional framework forward, the article, ‘Decolonising the University: New Directions’ by Achille Mbembe and the Decolonizing Science Toolkit may be useful (https://www.nature.com/collections/giaahdbacj)

Kind regards,

The AfDeP Team
